Abstract: Objectives Develop a protocol for estimating black bear population size and density in Bear Management Units within Wyoming, using DNA-based capture-recapture methodology. Evaluate the efficiency, and accuracy of DNA-based capture-recapture techniques for estimating black bear population size and density. Findings and Status Twenty-four black bear hair samples were collected from 3 different sites within the Park in 1998. Seven grizzly bear hair samples were collected from 1 site inside the Park boundary. These samples were collected in conjunction with other sites outside the Park within the Blackrock and Spread Creek drainages. Microsatelite DNA analysis is currently being conducted on all black bear samples collected to determine DNA fingerprints for each individual, and sex of each individual. This information will then be used to determine how many bears were captured and recaptured, and to calculate density and population estimates for the area. Once this information is obtained, a final report will be constructed, with a target date of 09/31/99.
