Abstract: The Sublette mule deer herd is one of Wyoming's most notable deer herds, with an abundance of trophy class animals and a population objective of 32,000. Expanding sub-divisions and anticipated oil/gas development have created concerns with protection of deer winter range and migratory routes. This project examines the distribution and habitat use of ?150 radio-collared deer in the Green River Basin. Data will be used to evaluate a cumulative effects model developed to identify negative effects of proposed oil/gas drilling in the area. Preliminary data from winter 1998-99 identified areas of the model needing modification. Further evaluation will be completed using data from winters 1998-99 and 1999-2000. Model predictions will be used to assist agencies and industry in mitigating and minimizing the effects of the oil/gas development on mule deer winter range.
