Abstract: U.S. Highway 30 as it passes through Nugget Canyon between Kemmerer and Cokeville, Wyoming is the site of hundreds of deer/vehicle collisions each year as mule deer of the Wyoming Range herd cross the highway while migrating between their winter and summer ranges. During the summer of 2001, an underpass was constructed by the Wyoming Department of Transportation at the site of a former at-grade crossing for mule deer. We are using a video camera system activated by infrared detectors to monitor deer activity at the underpass. The objectives of this study, funded by the Wyoming Department of Transportation, are to evaluate seasonal and daily patterns of mule deer use of the underpass, to determine suitable locations for future underpass construction in the area, and to assess how deer willingness to use the underpass is affected by manipulation of the size of the underpass using a series of plywood dividers. Preliminary results indicate that approximately 10% of the total number of deer crossing highway 30 are using the underpass. We are currently in the midst of the final field season of the project. A final report will be prepared by June 2003.
