Abstract: This publication has been developed as an attempt to summarize the existing information on the grizzly bear (Ursus horribilis), with special reference to the western United States. It is particularly directed toward examining the historical distribution, present status, and habitat relationships of the species. Our literature search has resulted in the accumulation of a vast amount of information, much of which is repetitious, some of which is contradictory, and all of which is important to the understanding of the grizzly. Rather than to record each note that we encountered relative to the grizzly, we selected the more important references to include in the literature summary, and have placed all other references in the bibliography. As our literature review progressed, it became apparent that there remains much to be learned about the grizzly and its habitat. There is a question about which particular elements of habitat are required for grizzly survival, which are only preferred, and which are relatively unimportant. It is hoped that this paper will serve to point out those areas involving grizzly habitat where more research and studies are needed.
