Abstract: Had seen ptarmigan during the fall hunting seasons regularly from late 1940s to mid 1970s. Last seen, they were at the head of Cliff Creek, 2 pair. In the past, they had been also around Hoback Peak (Cliff Creek & Hoback Peak area -- SECs 8, 9, 16 - T36N, R115W) (Hoback Peak Elev. is 10,862') about 22 airline miles from Northup sighting. Mr McNeal described the ptarmigan seen in Fall as -- "mottled white, had been grey or brown in summer with a little white near tail" -- in winter they were all white Will check for possible pictures The number of birds he had seen dropped from the 1940s to the 1970s when he stopped going into the high country. No idea of the decline, only a few hunters shot them.
