Abstract: The Grizzly Wildlife Habitat Management Area southwest of Rawlins was purchased by the Wyoming Game and Fish Department in 1991. It is being cooperatively managed by the WGFD and the Bureau of Land Management with the primary goal of providing wildlife habitat while developing strategies to accommodate livestock grazing. Four upland sagebrush sites on the Unit were identified for thinning with fire and tebuthiuron to enhance forage production and reduce grazing pressure on the adjacent riparian systems. Two sites were chemically treated in 1997 and two sites were burned in 1999. The Wyoming Coop Unit collected baseline data from 1995-99 to assess the short- and long-term vegetation and wildlife response to this management. In March 2000 we completed a report summarizing vegetation characteristics and small mammal, passerine, and sage grouse use on the Grizzly Unit.
