Abstract: Funding from the US National Park Service has permitted a major effort aimed at compiling refernces on bears. First prioirty has been given to brown (Ursus arctos) and black bear (U. americanus) material and North Ameircan information; however, an attempt is being made to eventually incorporate information on all bears on a worldwide basis. Substantial cooperation received from individual researchers and librarires, and extensive previous bibliographic effort including a variety of retrieval services have resulted in an initial collection of several thousand citations. These are being stored in comptuer files, keywords are being assigned, and abstracts will be appended as this can be done. As the fields become functional, custom searches can be provided; the results can be made available in a variety of traditional or computer-compatible formats. A real effort is being made to provide a clear statement as to what material has been searched and how the search was done; this should minimize the need for future reworking of the same sources.

Keywords: animal, mammal, bear, grizzly bear, Ursus arctos horribilis, black bear, Ursus americanus, Ursidae, bibliography
